Gemotions

He slammed his fist on the table, startling the cat that had been perched on the windowsill. The cat leaped away, disappearing under the couch. He immediately regretted his outburst. He ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. His wife would be home soon. He couldn't seem to shake the disquiet that had taken root within him.

He pictured the conversation with his wife. The inevitable questions about work, about the new hire. He'd have to pretend everything was alright, pretend that the situation didn't make him feel as though he were losing ground. It felt like all the hard work he had done these past years had been for nothing.
